About the Mississippi Lottery

The MLC was created following the passage of the Alyce G. Clarke Mississippi Lottery Law through the State Legislature in 2018.

The lottery has boosted Mississippi’s economy significantly. As of June 2020, the Lottery had transferred $60,006,706.47 to the State Treasury Lottery Proceeds Fund since tickets went on sale on November 25, 2019.

Lottery proceeds have already exceeded estimates of $40 million in the first year, and are quickly closing in on the $80 million that was projected for year two.

In the Lottery's first 10 years, proceeds up to $80 million annually have been earmarked for state roads and bridges to match federal funding. After the 10-year period, revenue up to $80 million will be sent to the State’s General Fund.

Any further revenue over $80 million per year will go to the Education Enhancement Fund, which contributes to early childhood education and classroom supplies.

Mississippi's first big lottery prize was a $2 million Mega Millions win by a woman from Gautier in the June 9, 2020 drawing. The lucky player chose to remain anonymous, but she did reveal that “When we heard the Mississippi Lottery was coming to Mississippi, I said I’d be the first to win!”

Rules

Players must be at least 21 years old to purchase Lottery tickets in Mississippi.

Winners have the choice to stay anonymous in the state; the Mississippi Lottery will not make a winner's identity public without written permission.

Lottery winnings are subject to state and federal taxes, which are automatically wittheld from payouts of $600 or more. The winner is responsible for taxes on amounts under $600.
